NIC Chile strengthens global infrastructure and Internet stability in our country with the installation of a mirror of the L Root Server, which adds to the first mirror of an Internet root server installed almost 5 years ago in Chile.
This modern equipment is financed by NIC Chile and will be operated by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), the organization responsible for administering and coordinating the Domain Name System (DNS) worldwide.
The domain name system consists of millions of interconnected servers, including the so-called root servers, which are those with the information to initiate resolving queries to the system. A technical limitation does not allow them to be over 13, identified by letters A through M. Of these original 13 root servers, ten were located in the U.S., two in Europe and one in Japan, which generated considerable concern about the small number of servers and their geographical concentration. To resolve this problem, in recent years a technique called anycast has been introduced, which allows the creation of clones of these root servers (known as mirrors), which, once in operation, are indistinguishable from the originals. This adds more efficiency to the system and at the same time provides greater security and stability.
Thee launch of this second mirror in the country will increase the independence from servers outside of Chile. This implies a significant operational strengthening, better resistance to denial of service attacks and greater transparency for the operation of the domain name system in Chile.
The installation almost 5 years ago of the first mirror in Chile placed the country as one of the first in the region with a root server. This, together with this new mirror, reinforces the country's image as a platform for services and business.
