Through a telematic session completed on March 31, the chilean academy of engineering completed the process of incorporating Professor Patricio Poblete Olivares as its Corresponding Member, a ceremony that had been postponed in August 2020 due to the pandemic.
Professor Poblete is a tenured academic of the Department of Computer Science at the University of Chile and director of the NIC Chile Center, dependent on the FCFM. He is in charge of the administration of the .CL identifier associated with Chile on the Internet. In the speech that he gave during that session, he referred to the development and challenges of the Internet in Chile, the world, and in particular, about domain names and the role that NIC Chile has played in the development of the .CL domain.
Elías Arze, vice-president of the Academy of Engineering mentioned that the institution feels is honored by the incorporation of professor Poblete, who has played a fundamental role in the digital development in Chile. The Chilean Academy of Engineering is a non-profit foundation established in 2009 by agreement of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Engineers of Chile with the objective of preserving, supporting and stimulating knowledge, progress, research, creation, development and dissemination of engineering sciences in the country. Currently, the Academy has eight Corresponding Members.
In recent years, Professor Patricio Poblete has received other acknowledgments for his contribution to the world of engineering, being awarded in 2015 with the Raúl Devés Jullian prize from the Institute of Engineers of Chile for his effort and work in teaching engineering in Chile, work he carried out during his 15 years as Director of the School of Engineering and Sciences of the University of Chile.
In addition, in 2019 he obtained the Management Award from the Chilean College of Engineers, which highlighted his professional career in the management of NIC Chile. The .CL name registry, whose leadership under Patricio Poblete has led the organization to be a key player within the country's digital infrastructure, actively becoming a leader within the global Internet community.
Professor Patricio Poblete has also been distinguished within the community that brings together the Internet Corporation for the Assignment of Names and Numbers (ICANN), who awarded him the ICANN Ethos Multi-sectorial award in 2017, for his contributions in the search for consensus-based solutions, recognizing the importance of the multi-stakeholder model for Internet governance. At the moment, he is serving his first term as part of the ICANN Board of Directors, nominated with the support of the ccNSO (Country Code Names Supporting Organization) community.
