The ICANN organization (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) presented Margarita Valdés (.CL), Legal and Commercial Director of NIC Chile, with the Dr. Tarek Kamel Award for Capacity Building in its 2023 edition event.

Created in 2020, this award recognizes those members of the ICANN community who take meaningful action to build skills on topics aligned with ICANN's mission to ensure a stable, unified, global Internet community.

The distinction was presented within the framework of the 78th ICANN meeting that took place in Hamburg, Germany from October 9 to 11. At the ceremony, the president of the ICANN Board of Directors, Tripti Sinha, highlighted the active career of Margarita Valdés and her work in the Latin American and global spheres in support of ICANN's mission.

Margarita Valdés participated in LACTLD (Latin American and Caribbean TLD Association), an organization that brings together domain name registries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and assumed the presidency of its Board of Directors during the period 2006-2008. She also served on the Council of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO), ICANN's support organization responsible for developing policies related to country top-level domain names (ccTLDs) around the world.

At the local level, she has participated in the creation of the Chile chapter of the Internet Society in 2019 and in 2021 she participated as guest director of the Chilean technology company association Chiletec. She is currently part of the team that conceived and promotes the Legal Assistance and Guidance Program for .CL domain owners, a local initiative that has sparked interest in other actors in the internet ecosystem, among many other achievements.
